Composting is an excellent method to recycle organic waste and nutrients into soil and this method also cut down large collection of garbage. Composting is normally done in two ways: indoor composting and outdoor composting and people with garden and backyards can go for outdoor composting. For the outdoor composting, compost bin is very important and there are many cost effective way to create the bin. Before making the bin, it is highly important to find the right place to install the bin and the most recommended place is close to the garden.
The bin can be made using the materials such as welded wire fencing, ties or nylon string, branches, twigs, organic waste such as food scraps, weeds, fresh grass clippings, dried leaves, shredded paper, and coffee grounds. The welded wire fencing should be at least 36 inches height and the edge of the fences should be properly cut and filed to avoid the sharp edges, sometimes the edge can be duct taped. Now, the fence can be wrapped in the form of cylinder and should be placed in the area, which is convenient, shady, properly leveled, and has good drainage facility. Now, simple layer of twigs and branches should be arranged at the bottom of the bin with proper air flow inside the bin.
Then, another layer of about 6 inches saw dust, dried leaves, or shredded paper should be laid and above this layer, another layer of organic waste should be placed. Again a layer of saw dust or dried leaves should be placed over the organic wastes and the one should remember that kitchen wastes should be covered under dried leaves or saw dust. The layering of organic wastes and dried leaves should be continued until the bin becomes full and every time while adding these materials, air flow should be increased by fluffing. If the materials are very dry, little water should be added over the materials to make it damp, and the materials should not be made soggy.
The time for the composting process can be increased by moving the bin upside down and this can be done more often. By turning the bin once in fall and once in spring should finish the composting process within a year. The compost is ready to harvest when it becomes rich, brown color soil, and the harvest can be simply done by removing the fence. The fence can be once again arranged to do composting another time.
